Robert Jakes is a sculptor and community artist based in south Pembrokeshire. His work often involves creating visual features for specific places and communities both in the UK and abroad. He works with wood, and makes mixed-media mosaics, and has developed a special interest in community lantern events. Among his previous projects is the creation of the cast bronze plaques that form Pembroke Dock Heritage Trail, based on designs by children from six local schools.

Sea of Stories Murals
Robert’s work for the project has been the creation of two rich and informative maritime maps. His first ceramic tile mural, Sea of Stories is now sited at the Ferry Terminal at Pembroke Dock, and combines images and text to explore the stretch of water between Pembroke Dock and Rosslare. This mural, and a newly-commissioned sister piece Sea of Stories II (Dublin-Holyhead), celebrates the cultural history of the sea between Ireland and Wales. Rob’s work captures stories of crossings by air and sea, and of monsters, lost lands, and the wonderful marine life found beneath the waves.

The design of the mural was developed by placing stories on a map of the sea, as images and short texts, in order to position stories in relation to each other.
The Sea of Stories mosaic is now installed at the ferry terminal in Pembroke Dock. The terminal is publicly accessible around the times of the ferry arrival and departure times and the mural can be found in the cafe.
